Kelly #2
The way Jack described "sleep' made is seem like it was one of the things he lived for. As many of my classmates have discussed, Jack can't finish the things he has started like getting his Ph.D. and also his relationship with Lois. But when Jack describes sleep, he talks about it like Fraud would saying "You don't dream in that kind of sleep, but you are aware of it every minute you are asleep, as though you were having a long dream of sleep itself, and in that sleep you were dreaming of sleep, sleeping and dreaming of sleep infinitely inward into the center."(p141) Sleep seems to be something that Jack can return to, and something that he took seriously. "Lots of nights I would go to bed early, too. Sometimes sleep gets to be a serious and complete thing. You stop going to sleep in order that you may be able to get up, but get up in order that you may be able to go back to sleep."(p140) Unlike Jacks relationship with Lois and his failed Ph.D. sleep is not something he gives up on and something he continues to love. "But this time there wasn't any American History, and there wasn't any Lois. But there was sleep."(p141) Sleeping is a very important aspect of everyone's life, but to Jack its something that gets serious.
